Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge

Protects 1.2 million acres bordering the Missouri River and Fort Peck Lake. Live bison are penned at the headquarters, from which a loop auto tour begins via MT191. Sights include waterfowl, raptors, deer, and the world's largest remaining herd of prairie elk. On future refuge land in spring 1805, Lewis shot an elk that stood 5'3" at the shoulder.
